“Zineb Sedira’s project for the French Pavilion takes the pulse of our era. Revisiting a period of prolific cinematographic coproductions between Algeria, France, and Italy, the exhibition highlights the influence that several films from the long years of the 1960s have exerted on the desires of emancipation that underlie several post-colonial projects. At the heart of the installation, designed by Zineb Sedira, unfolds a masterful interplay of dialogue between reality and fiction, in which personal elements from the artist’s biography are intertwined with key scenes from iconic films of this period. In this ensemble, made up of films, photographs, sound, sculptures, and collages, an immersive environment emerges which, while taking into account a not so distant past, strives to deconstruct the contested politics of the present.”
